Abstract
In addition to his knowledge of Serbian, Hungarian, French and Italian in various degrees, Todor Manojlović had an excelent knowledge of German. That is exactly the language in which he wrote his diary and began his literary work. There is a significant part of Manojlovićʼs literary legacy written in foreign languages, as well as in German, among which are numerous letters, that have been kept in the Historical Archives of the city of Zrenjanin which have yet to be published.
During his Law studies in Budapest and Nagyvárad, Manojlović maintained frequent correspondence with his family members and friends. Although rich, his written legacy in German hasnʼt been researched, which is why it should be presented to the public.
Linka Krsmanović (née Petrović), which was one of the sisters of Manojlovićʼs mother Sofia, together with Olga Putić, had taken care of Manojlović after the death of his parents. Linka continued to support him until her death. Four letters of the corespondence with Linka have been perserved in the Historical Archives of the city of Zrenjanin. None of his answers are known of.
Two of the letters from the year 1910 are discussed in this paper. They are presented in German and their Serbian translation. The corespondence is noteworthy since it contains information about Manojlovićs first literary review. The review in question is about a collection of short stories, Saputnici, by Isidora Sekulić. Manojlović sent the review to a literary journal Srpski književni glasnik in 1910, where it was rejected. Later, after a sugestion by Linka, he published the review in another literary journal, Letopis Matica srpska. The letters give us an idea of the dinamics of the Manojlović and Krsmanović families. They also reveal the turning point in the life of Manojlović. The time when he finally got the courage to rebell against his familyʼs wishes for him to go into a career of law and start his path to the serbian litarary intelligentsia.
