Conceptualization of Sadness in English and Serbian: A Cognitive Linguistic Analysis
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper represents a contrastive cognitive linguistic analysis of SADNESS conceptualization in English and Serbian. The main aim of this paper is to determine the similarities and differences regarding conceptual metaphors and metonymies used in SADNESS conceptualization in English and Serbian, as well as to the way they are lexicalized. The analysis is based on a corpus consisting of English and Serbian idioms related to the concept of sadness and extracted from monolingual dictionaries. By identifying the metaphors and metonymies underlying the idioms, it is established that the most frequent conceptual metaphors in both English and Serbian are SADNESS IS DOWN and SADNESS IS PAIN/ILLNESS, as well as that the most common conceptual metonymy is THE CONSEQUENCE OF SADNESS FOR SADNESS. Based on the results it could be concluded that, despite the differences in lexicalization and the appearence of certain culturally specific metaphors, there is a major overlap in the ways SADNESS is conceptualized in English and Serbian, which supports the theory of the universality of metaphors based on and caused by the shared embodied experience.
