THE LINGUISTIC PICTURE OF GOD IN SLOVAK AND SERBIAN BIBLICAL PHRASEOLOGY

Abstract

Apart from being an integral part of a nation’s culture’s concept of spirituality, the nation’s values and identity, Christianity and the Bible have played a major role for Slovaks and Serbs in the process of forming a literary language, as well as in times when their survival was threatened. Today, they represent a base, which is drawn from in various contexts. In that sense, the question arises as to what, or who God is, and how he is perceived in these nations. The answer can be found in the Bible, but also in linguistic research and in dictionaries. The basic meaning of a word listed in lexicographic dictionaries is often not sufficient, as it does not reflect reality in such a way as to provide information about what a specific term means to a person, how he/she understands and explains it. Using the cognitive definition of a specific term and the categorization of its characteristics, it is possible to show how the members of a specific language community perceive a specific term. Given that phraseology represents a source of reconstruction of the linguistic picture of the world, this discipline can significantly contribute to the conceptualization of the researched concepts.


The basic dictionary meaning of the word God is connected with its religious understanding. By researching the phraseological material of Slovak and Serbian, we discover that the understanding of God in these nations is broader. By conceptual analysis of Slovak and Serbian biblical phrasemes, the following concepts of God have been identified: God is authority, God is a judge, God is help, God is a benefactor, God is health, God is wisdom, God is love, God is a guest, God is life, God is morality. The Slovak people perceive God also as eternity, while the Serbian people perceive God additionally as fear and truth.


The research shows that the human perception of God’s attributes, that is, the linguistic image of God in the Slovak and Serbian nation, coincides with the theological principles in the Bible, and that God and Christianity are an integral part of the value system of Slovaks and Serbs.
