Abstract

The paper analyzes the problem of sample selection in the mixed methods approach. Generally speaking, mixed methods research was foremost created to overcome the deficiencies of the qualitative and quantitative approaches. The main purpose of mixed methods research is a deeper explanation and understanding of phenomena from multiple aspects, i.e., from multiple dimensions, which is achieved by collecting multiple forms and types of data, both qualitative and quantitative. The essential characteristic of mixed methods research is the process of collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data in the same project and research design, where both types of data are present from the very beginning. This type of research is underrepresented in Serbian methodological literature, even more so when it comes to the problems that arise due to sample selection. The basic characteristics of the most frequently used random and non-random samples are briefly pointed out, and subsequently the characteristics of samples in mixed methods research are analyzed. Through the analysis of basic sampling problems in these studies, it is concluded that the sample in mixed methods studies is designed to answer the research questions. When creating a research design, both types of samples are used: both random and non-random. The sample size is variable and depends on the combination of samples, so it is not predetermined as with random and purposive samples. The data obtained by such sampling are both numerical (quantitative) and narrative (qualitative).
