FERDINAND GREGOROVIUS’ ABRUZZO: A COMPARISON AMONG ITALIAN TRANSLATIONS

Abstract

Following a journey he made in 1871 to visit the interior part of Abruzzo, the German historian Ferdinand Gregorovius wrote an account that he published in 1873 in the fourth volume of his Wanderjahre in Italien. For the time, this is one of the few foreign texts devoted to a region of Italy that was still little known and appreciated. Gregorovius approached its description with enthusiasm and sincere admiration for its natural beauty, as well as with a conscientious reverence for its history. The result is a passionate and engaging prose that casts Abruzzo in an enchanting light, on a par with other, better-known Italian locations. In the Italian translations of the Wanderjahre, however, the pages devoted to Abruzzo (when present) seem to be treated with less attention and philological care than in other chapters, as if to reflect that attitude of scarce interest in the region that had characterised the first post-Unitarian decade. The translation thus mirrors the translator’s personal disposition towards the text, which in turn reflects a common feeling, even to the point of disregarding the author’s intentions in some passages. The analysis was conducted by comparing the original text with its Italian translations.
