Abstract

The topic of the article is the analysis of flashbacks, trips, or jumps to the past, in the film Julieta (2016) by renowned Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. Julieta is based on three stories by Canadian writer Alice Munro titled Destiny, Soon and Silence and tells the story of a woman over several decades. The plot follows Julieta who, after a traumatic event, loses contact with her daughter. Her unexpected meeting with her daughter's best friend inspires her to write a letter to her distant daughter, remembering the past. The protagonist's pain and guilt are present throughout the film without the audience knowing its origin. Telling complex stories chronologically can be tedious, so authors resort to a different narrative structure using the analepsis or flashback technique. Almodóvar's stories are always very complex and have a background that must be explained. To explain the present, a jump is made to the past, the narrative is broken with a memory, a dialogue, or an event, which is related to the current moment with the aim of looking at the past. In addition to time travel, this film also features travel through space and the color palette as symbols. The aim of the article is to obtain deeper insight into the psychological portrait of a female character, understanding the pain and sense of loss caused by traumatic events from the past.
