THE MYTHIC THOUGHT IN THE INDEPENDENCE SUNS BY AHMADOU KOUROUMA

Abstract
This article proposes a reading of Kourouma’s novel based on sociology, and anthropology of religions, and in particular on the works of Lucien Lévy-Bruhl, Roger Caillois, Mircea Éliade, Van Gennep and Émile Durkheim, as well as on Ernst Cassirer’s synthesis about the mythic thought. The article proves that the theme of the sterility of Fama, old prince of Horodougou, is connected with the theme of the poverty of his people and his fatherland, both themes having their source in the ancient belief than the infirmity of the aging king causes the sterility and misery of his country.
The second part of this article is dedicated to the study of space in this novel. The space is not homogeneous for mythic thought, but is divided into the sacred space and the profane one, this division implying the axiology and the division of the characters. The novel opens and closes with the narrative of a character’s return to his homeland– first it is Koné Ibrahima’s shade, and then Fama who returns to Horodougou. Their coming back home is represented as entering the sacred space, with the repetition of the rite of passage motive, but Kourouma’s approach to the mythic thought is a parodic one.
