Observations on enjambment in writings on a verse of Svetozar Petrović

Abstract

The paper highlights a multitude of observations and different perspectives on enjambment in Petrović's writings on a verse, which were later complemented in a correspondence with a foreign colleague, enabling complete characterization of this theoretical term. Petrović wrote about enjambment as a poetic process on different occasions; segments of various papers used as argumentation for literary-historical situation and the effects of verse semantics stand out, as well as two comprehensive papers dedicated to the enjambment problematics. There is a tendency to thoroughly define the term relative to the existing definitions; the difference between the usual sense (acceptable in practical use to most of those who engage in poetry) and the extended scope of the term; polemic with previous understandings and interpretations, in particular, on the one hand, on the issue of specifying historical development, and, on the other hand, on the issue of the presence of enjambment in the oral folk verse.
