ENGLISH LANGUAGE ATTITUDES: FIRST WORDS, SENTENCES, RHYMES AND FAVOURITE CARTOONS AND ANIMATED FILMS

Abstract

The present sociolinguistic study offers an insight into the English language attitudes of 788 Vojvodinian 3rd and 4th-grade secondary school students who are native speakers of Hungarian. Based on the data collected in a survey, we discuss the potential differences between the attitued of our informants depending on the tzpe of school they attend (grammar school or vocational school). The topics covered in the study include the first English words, sentences and rhymes our informants report to have acquired early in their childhood, as well as the English-language cartoons and animated films they remeber having wathced most and liked best in theor childhood. The results of the study are expected to complement the results of existing research into the English language attitudes of Hungarian native speaking students in Vojvodina. The conclusions reached in this research may serve as a basis for the English language education of young learners of the Hungarian-speaking minority in Vojvodina.
