A SERBIAN WRITER IN SEARCH OF SPAIN: THE IMAGE OF GRANADA IN THE WORK OF MILOŠ CRNJANSKI

Abstract
Following the theoretical approaches of imagology, in this article we propose to question the vision of Granada and Spain in the travel stories of the Serbian writer Miloš Crnjanski (1893–1977). This writer visited Spain in 1933 with a group of journalists, representatives of various European countries and the United States. The official trip, with the purpose of bearing witness to the Spanish social, political and cultural situation during the Second Republic, as well as to promote Spain's tourist riches, resulted in several travelogues and articles that Crnjanski published on different topics related to Spain and Spanish people. Among the topics discussed by the author, the search for a "true" Spain stands out. We will analyze how this topic is related to the vision of Andalusia, and Granada in particular, questioning some stereotypes and common places that appear in the description of it. Among the thematic axes we will analyze Spanish music and the impression it left on Crnjanski, then the theme of the passage of time based on Spanish history, as well as the loss of Spanish authenticity based on the opposition between the traditional and the modern in contemporary Spain. Using the theories of intertextuality, we will question the weight of the author's cultural baggage, which, together with the impressions of the foreign traveler, largely defines the image he offers of this city. We conclude that Crnjanski is searching for a romantic, traditional image od Spain which he recognizes as an authentic one.
